Archive for the ‘work’

I am so enjoying my day off

And I’m not doing a darn thing either. Today is my last vacation day of the year. Then I go back to work for 3 days and I have another 3 day weekend. The only regret that I have is when I got sick a couple of weeks ago. I was out of sick days so I had to use vacation days so that I wouldn’t miss out on getting paid. If I hadn’t used those days, I would have off of work tomorrow as well. Oh well I can’t worry about water under the bridge.

On the plus side, next week starts a new year which means a new vacation schedule. I’ve been at my job for 5 years so I’m finally back up to 3 weeks of vacation.

So they interviewed two of my coworkers

Grrrr. I knew they had interviewed one of my coworkers but I just found out that another coworker had the interview as well. So why am I aggravated? Because the 2nd coworker didn’t even apply for the position!

It seems that HR goes through resumes to see if people from the same area are applying for jobs. They feel if one person is qualified then probably all of them are. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The 2nd coworker has a completely different job than what we have and they can’t do what me and the 1st coworker can. So while in theory they’re qualified, once they sit down with the manager they’ll see that they’re not qualified at all. As long as they didn’t talk about alcohol detox in the interview, they should be fine. The manager wasn’t tricky but she did pose some questions that could trip you up.

I’ll really be happy if one of my coworkers gets the job because we all want to get out of the area that we work in. But I’ll be really upset that it wasn’t me. Especially since I’m the only one out of the 3 of us that really wants the job.

No news on the job front

I’m still waiting unfortunately. My coworker had a interview on Monday so I know they’re not finished interviewing yet. I do know that the hiring manager wasn’t happy with any of the candidates that she interviewed the first week. I was the first person she interviewed in the second week and my coworker was in week three with the assistant manager.

I know the hiring manager is out until after the 1st of the year but I’m hoping she gets together with the assistant manager and makes a decision before then. Until then I have to go with no news is good news.

You would think I would enjoy my day off work

But no I didn’t, not at all. There was a “game” yesterday. The Steelers played like crap. The whole light fiasco was a hoot. I think it put a chink in the players game mojo because it messed up their rhythm. No excuses because the 49ers still executed and won decisively. Could I have saved my time and watched something else, you betcha.

I was off work because I had 2 vacation days to burn. I didn’t do anything yesterday but I didn’t feel like cooking so I went out and bought lunch. It was a opportunity to save a couple of bucks but I didn’t take it. Whoops!

I need to start planning my menu for next week now. The holiday is Sunday so stores will be crazy crowded on Saturday so I’m definitely not going out that day.  Monday the 26th is a federal holiday and my last vacation day is Tuesday the 27th. I am not going out to eat all of those days. I already have a holiday menu now I just need something for those random days off. Luckily I also have my New Years kielbasa on deck, I just need sauerkraut and whatever else I decide to have that day.

I’ll be a busy bee over the next couple of days.

No rest for the weary

I should be happy that it’s Friday but I’m really not. I have this project that I’m working on that is supposed to be done by the 27th of this month. There is no way it will be done on time. Only half of the project will be done. I’ve estimated that it will take me 6 days minimum to get 3/4 of it done and that’s not counting today.

We have 9 working days left in the year and I’m off for 2 of those, leaving me with 7  days before the end of the year. So I have today plus 1 additional day. Did I mention that 2 of those days we will leave work early, so that’s 1 1/2 days left? There is no way I’m finishing this project on time.

I may have to come in to work tomorrow. As if that’s not bad enough, I won’t even get paid for the 5 or so hours that I put in. If I even remotely finish this project by the 30th, even I’ll be amazed at my progress.

I’m waiting on pins and needles

Ughhhhh I hate waiting. Patience is definitely not a virtue for me. I thought I had a good shot of getting the job but I found out that they are still interviewing people so that’s not good news for me. They’ve been interviewing for the past week and a half already. The manager is out sick so my coworker is interviewing with the assistant manager next week.

Not good news for me. I guess I had better keep searching the open positions list.

Today is our holiday party

The food was good but extremely heavy. We went with an Italian restaurant. We had chicken alfredo, pasta with meat sauce, green beans, mashed potatoes and salad. We also had tiramisu and cannoli’s. Like I said, a great meal but really heavy. I guess it’s a good thing that we had lunch at 11:30am. If we had waited until our normal lunch, which is 1pm for me, we would have not made it through the end of the day.

We also had some word search games and played a “don’t forget the lyrics” type of game. Our management team gave out little goodie bags including candy and lottery tickets. We gave our big boss a candy jar filled with candy. Our immediate manager got lottery tickets and a gift card.

All in all it was a pretty good day.

My interview went well

Another day, another interview. It seems like I’m forever interviewing but I’ve only had 3 interviews this entire year. That’s more than I would like but apparently not enough since I really want to get out of my department.

The interview was fairly smooth. I didn’t pause or use “uh” or “um” too much, even though I did use them a couple of times. There were no canned bogus questions either which was great. Everything was straight forward as far as tell me what you can do and what you bring to the table.

I really would like this position as it offers more opportunity for advancement than my current position. It also offers more money which is always a plus. I’ve been researching various investments including CD type annuity rates and I’m just waiting until I make a little more money before I actually pull the trigger on making an investment. I don’t want to tie up too much of my money but I do want the best rates on the money that I do invest.

Hopefully this is the job for me.

I’m under the weather again

Ughhh. I really should have called off from work today because I feel like crap. I have 4 vacation days left that I could have moved around so I could have today off. I thought of that once I was already on the bus on my way to work.

I was sick all weekend and I’m still feverish with a cough today. I just hope the day passes fairly quickly so I can go home and rest.

One of my coworkers is pretty strange

Today is really cold and windy. It’s also raining. When I get to work, I open my umbrella and leave it open in my cube hoping it will dry out. So a coworker walks into my cube, past the umbrella, sits down and we start to talk about a party we’re having at work and then the conversation turns to the weather in general. I say how cold it is and how glad I was that I keep an extra jacket at work.

She then looks at me and says, well it’s wet too…do you have an umbrella? I was flabbergasted and almost didn’t know how to respond. She had to pass the umbrella to get into the chair and it was almost touching her as we spoke. I just nodded and said yes and kept talking.

Sometimes I wonder about that woman.
